The Wizard of Oz

"Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't you think?" ― Dorothy, from the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

THANKS TO Larry and Sharon Stein for this. It's a classic, just like the movie.

The Wizard of Oz is 72 years old. If Dorothy were to encounter men today with no brains, no heart and no guts, she wouldn't be in Oz, she'd be in Congress.

From left to right: no guts, no heart, Toto, Dorothy and no brains.

Speaking of Emerald Cities, today while I was in the waiting room at my chiropractor's office, I paged through the August issue of Family Circle magazine. There's an article in it with the editors' 2011 picks for the 10 best US towns for families. I have a reader or two in Fairhope, Alabama, and there it was listed at number four! I wouldn't even have noticed the story without that connection.

Here's the whole list:

1)  St. Charles, Illinois
2)  Peachtree City, Georgia
3)  Liberty, Missouri
4)  Fairhope, Alabama
5)  Friendswood, Texas
6)  Novi, Michigan
7)  Trumball, Connecticut
8)  Germantown, Wisconsin
9)  Oviedo, Florida
10) Maple Valley, Washington

The midwest and southeast were big winners. Click here to see details about each city as well as the selection criteria.

Congratulations, Fairhope, although I'm sorry to say that there should probably be an asterisk next the listing that says *as long as you don't look foreign. Unfortunately, Fairhope isn't exempt from Alabama's new anti-immigration law that makes it illegal for anyone to drive an undocumented person to a church or hospital and requires school children to report on their parents' immigration status. So contrary to the name, not much 'fair hope' if you're an immigrant. You can read more about this extreme law on a previous blog called 'Bama girl by clicking on the title.
